On the arable side, wheat is our primary crop and makes a very short journey to Tilbury for milling.

Homegrown feeds for the dairy and beef enterprises include maize, lucerne, barley, beans and grass.

For the anaerobic digestion (AD) plant we grow maize and wholecrop rye.

Many years of considered and varied crop rotations and conscientiously planned cultivations are evident in the health of our soils and has been a major help in keeping control of black grass amongst other weed and disease challenges. The AD plant has given our break crops a profitable end market, where previously they were grown largely just to benefit the soil for the next wheat crop. Digestate application being part of the break crop cycle.

The rotations vary depending upon a number of factors, including soil type, field size, location, drainage and many others.

Lucerne is an excellent feed for the dairy cows, but the deep rooting plant has made a substantial improvement to our more marginal land with visible benefits to the following crop.

Digestate from the AD plant has greatly improved our lighter soils, working wonders on our permanent grass, greatly improving our grassland management and thus stocking density, which is a key area of focus for improved land use and movement towards Net Zero.
